Elizabeth Eichbrecht, a rising star in the high school swimming scene, made a splash at the 2026 Michigan Open. Representing Supernova Swim Team, the 17-year-old Indiana commit wasted no time making headlines with an impressive performance in the 1650 freestyle. Clocking a time of 16:06.54, she won the race by nearly 42 seconds, shattering her personal best by 41.33 seconds. But here's where it gets controversial... Eichbrecht's new lifetime best would have placed 10th at the 2025 Big Ten Championships and would have been quick enough for 22nd at the NCAA Championships. And this is the part most people miss... Her time also breaks a Michigan high school state record, tearing down 10-time Olympic medalist Allison Schmitt's record of 1:46.25 in the 200 free, which was set back in 2007. With only Charlotte Crush faster in the class, Eichbrecht's time puts her within eight-tenths of the 2025 NCAA cutline (1:44.74). But what's even more impressive is that Eichbrecht leveled up in several events over the past year, highlighted by her 200 free time that now ranks #2 in the class. In the 500 free, she dropped more than six seconds earlier this season to clock 4:41.54, a Michigan high school state record that stands 2.47 seconds faster than anyone in state history. The time makes her the third-fastest swimmer in the class of 2026. Eichbrecht's times will help fill critical gaps on the Hoosiers' current roster, where she would currently rank first in the 500 free (4:41.54) and the mile (16:06.54), and third in the 200 free (1:45.05). Alongside fellow incoming recruits Han and Downey, she'll help rebuild a distance group that currently has only two swimmers who have contested the 1650 this season, with the fastest being 16:29.07, and just three swimmers sub-4:50 in the 500 free. And this is the part most people miss... She could also end up focusing on the 100 fly after posting a time of 53.58 at the 2025 Michigan Open. Eichbrecht swam to a second-place finish in that event on Saturday, clocking 53.68, and is slated to contest the 200 fly and 400 IM to conclude the meet on Sunday evening. So, what do you think?
