Inter's Tactical Shake-Up: A Bold Experiment in the Coppa Italia!
Cristian Chivu, the manager of FC Internazionale, recently unveiled a surprising tactical shift for their Coppa Italia semi-final clash against Como. This move, which he described as a 'first time like this,' was born out of necessity and a desire to adapt to the team's current resources. "We've got to make do with what we have," Chivu stated, highlighting the pragmatic approach behind his decisions.
While Inter has been dominating Serie A with a commanding 10-point lead, their cup performances have been a different story. After an unexpected exit from the Champions League, where they suffered losses to Bodo/Glimt both home and away, the team also found it challenging to generate scoring opportunities in their 0-0 Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against Como. This means the tie will be decided in the return leg at San Siro, scheduled for April 21 or 22.
But here's where it gets controversial... Chivu confessed to Sport Mediaset that he fielded a formation he'd never used before: a pair of creative midfielders supporting a lone striker. This was a significant departure from their usual setup, especially given the absence of key forwards like Lautaro Martinez and Ange-Yoan Bonny, and Marcus Thuram not being at full fitness. "I had a few problems to deal with, we were forced into some changes," Chivu explained. "It's the first time I played with a pair of creative midfielders supporting the striker."
Beyond the midfield setup, Inter also tweaked their defensive strategy. "We also changed our way of defending, especially in our own half," Chivu revealed. "We tried to attack them man for man, but were a bit slow with our wing-back closing on their left-back." He noted that Como's forwards, who were dropping deeper, posed a unique challenge. "They are so good at keeping the ball, passing it around and drawing you out to then attack the space."
Despite the unusual circumstances and limited preparation time – playing just 72 hours after their last match – Chivu praised his players for their quick understanding of the instructions. "The lads did well to understand the instructions quickly and give their best, knowing that at times we had to accept Como's possession play."
And this is the part most people miss... With the crucial Serie A derby against rivals Milan looming this Sunday – a match that could also decide the Scudetto – Chivu acknowledged the squad rotation for the Como game. "We had two strikers available today, so we decided to share the playing time between them," he said. "We've got to make do with what we have, and the lads did well to recognise the difficulty of this match. They had the right approach, even if it wasn't a real Inter type of game, and not admittedly very entertaining to watch either."
Now, the big question for fans and analysts alike: Could this experimental approach be deployed against Milan, or will Inter revert to their trusted 3-5-2 formation? Chivu elaborated on the nature of the Como match, stating, "Both teams tonight were sitting back a bit to wait and see, because Como dropped Vojvoda down for a five-man defence at times, so it wasn't entertaining because both teams struggled to find the right spaces." He added, "It was the first time we tried to build with two playmakers, and had two creative midfielders like Diouf and Frattesi behind the striker. That changes a lot."
Looking ahead to the derby, Chivu remained coy: "We've got four days before the derby, we'll see who is available, and then decide what to do for that match."
In a lighthearted moment, Chivu joked with former teammates Christian Panucci and Andrea Ranocchia, who were in the studio. "I think I prefer it when they insult me, I got so used to criticism lately," he quipped, referencing past critiques.
