The beloved ABC presenter, Michael Rowland, bid an emotional farewell to his viewers and colleagues on Monday, marking the end of a 39-year career at the broadcaster. Rowland's decision to step down was driven by a profound desire to prioritize his family, particularly his ailing wife, Nicola Webber. In an exclusive interview with ABC News Breakfast, the 57-year-old reflected on his bittersweet journey.
"After nearly four decades immersed in the fast-paced world of daily news and current affairs, I've realized that now is the time to make a change," Rowland shared. "It's been a challenging yet rewarding experience, but I've witnessed the toll it takes on many colleagues. My wife's health has been a concern over the past year, and I want to dedicate more time to her and our family, embracing a slower pace of life."
Rowland's journey at ABC began in 1987, when he joined as a news cadet. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a political and financial correspondent. In the early 2000s, he relocated to Washington as ABC's North America correspondent, covering significant events like Barack Obama's election and the 2008 financial crisis. Since 2010, he has been a co-host of ABC News Breakfast, working alongside esteemed colleagues like Virginia Trioli and Lisa Millar.
Rowland met his wife, Nicola, during their political journalism days in Canberra in the early 2000s. They married in 2002 and have two children, Tom and Eleanor. In a heartwarming interview, Nicola revealed the strength of their bond, stating, 'I still look forward to seeing him every day. We balance each other, make each other laugh, and even frustrate each other. It's a cliché, but we're a great team.'
Despite not divulging details about Nicola's illness, the couple has faced numerous health challenges over the years. Rowland previously revealed their near-loss of their son Tom due to a rare food allergy and his own diagnosis of legal blindness in one eye, which improved after treatment. Additionally, their daughter, Eleanor, faced a cancer scare at 18 months old, but thankfully, she was cancer-free.
