In a bold move that underscores the urgency of the situation, the Communications Workers' Union (CWU) is organizing a protest outside Leinster House today, highlighting the troubling delays in pension increases for 20,000 retirees from An Post and eir.
This action comes as the union expresses deep frustration over what it views as an unjustified holdup by the Government in giving the green light to these much-needed increases. According to the CWU, these adjustments had already been negotiated and approved by various stakeholders, including unions, trustees, actuaries, and company boards.
The union's statement reflects a growing concern for older citizens who are struggling financially, emphasizing that the delay by the Government is not only disrespectful but also exacerbates the challenges faced by pensioners living on fixed incomes. "Many of these individuals do not receive annual increases to their State pensions, making these agreed-upon enhancements critical for managing daily expenses," remarked Seán McDonagh, General Secretary of the CWU.
He pointed out, "There is absolutely no financial rationale for this delay. The pension schemes involved are private, well-regulated, and in solid financial standing, meaning there is no burden on the Exchequer." This statement raises important questions about the Government's priorities when it comes to supporting vulnerable populations.
Back in October 2025, An Post had reached out to the Department of Communications, seeking approval for a 6% pension increase effective January 1, 2025, alongside a 1% rise starting June 1, 2025. While Minister of State Charlie McConalogue has given his approval, the CWU notes that final consent from the Minister for Public Expenditure is still pending, which is crucial before any pension increases can be disbursed.
A spokesperson from the Department of Communications commented, "At this time, we cannot specify a timeline for when both shareholding Ministers will finalize their decision on the proposed increases. However, we are actively working to complete the necessary approval process." This lack of clarity could leave many retirees anxious as they await news on their financial futures.
Furthermore, last year, a request for a 2.1% pension increase for former Telecom Éireann employees was submitted to the Department of Communications for implementation on July 1, 2025. The department is currently consulting with the New Economy and Recovery Authority (NewERA) regarding this request, which is under their review at present.
The Department of Communications emphasized the importance of taking the necessary time for the pension approval process, stating that it ensures robust governance procedures are upheld.
