Surrey's Creative Journey: Art Therapy's Impact on Well-being
In a heartwarming display of creativity and resilience, the House of Commons recently showcased the powerful work of Surrey's art therapy program. This initiative, led by the dedicated mental health service provider Mindworks, offers a unique avenue for individuals in their care to express themselves through art. The artists, who attend weekly workshops, drew inspiration from the captivating film 'Wicked: For Good', starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
The exhibition, officially opened by Epsom MP Helen Maguire, highlights the transformative potential of art therapy. Rebecca Robertson, a specialist mental health and art therapist, emphasizes the benefits of art-making as an alternative to traditional verbal therapies, especially for young people dealing with trauma. She states, 'Art-making can provide an important alternative to more traditional verbal therapies and can be a vital part of helping young people to engage in support, particularly when working with trauma.'
The 'Know Yourself, Grow Yourself' exhibition is a testament to the therapeutic power of art. It provides a safe space for children and young people under the Stars and New Leaf services to explore their emotions and life experiences through art materials. This initiative not only fosters self-expression but also encourages personal growth and development, offering a unique and impactful approach to mental health support.
